A national capacity building workshop was hold in Antigua in July 2012 in which participated representatives of the government, social and environmental NGOS, Indigenous Peoples, private sector, women and academia. The workshop provided an opportunity for raising awareness about the REDD+ Strategy, safeguards and REDD+ SES and a proposal for establishing the National Social and environmental Safeguards Commission was presented and discussed by the participants.

The Social and Environmental Safeguards Commission developed a work plan for the development and implementation of REDD+ SES safeguards, including a capacity building programme to strengthen the knowledge of the members on safeguards so that they can participate effectively in the implementation. Between July 2013 and February 2014, a series of capacity building workshops was organized on Climate change, REDD+, safeguards, country approach to safeguards, safeguards information systems and REDD+ SES.

The Social and Environmental Safeguards Commission is currently revising the work plan for the development and implementation of safeguards.
